Coimetrophobia
Coimetrophobia: The fear of cemeteries.
If you are afraid of cemeteries, you may have Coimetrophobia which is the name for such a fear. In some ways it makes sense that there are people who are afraid of cemeteries because they are a location for dead people and a lot of us have anxiety about the dead and about dying ourselves. Most people are able to come to terms with the anxiety and deal with cemeteries when the occasion calls for it. However, there are some who have an intense phobia which is out of the normal range. Those who have Coimetrophobia will do everything they can to avoid going into or near a cemetery. They will not be able to attend funerals because the fear is so severe.
Coimetrophobia can inhibit a person’s ability to meet personal and family obligations which can cause negativity within relationships and alienate people from their friends and loved ones. If a person has developed this phobia, the symptoms of the anxiety can cause physical symptoms such as sweating, nausea, irregular breathing, irregular heartbeat and possibly a panic attack which is terrifying. The cause of Coimetrophobia is not know but can be related to concerns about mortality of self and others, childhood fears perhaps related to immature understanding of death and cemeteries, and even Halloween and horror movies.
Most people realize the fear is not warranted to severe extent but will often feel helpless and as if they have no control. Coimetrophobia can be treated. Sometimes, religious beliefs can sometimes help minimize anxiety. Often, this phobia will require professional intervention. One can choose psychotherapy to explore the root cause and maintaining causes in order to understand the fear and start changing behavior. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help one to develop management strategies to deal with the anxiety. Hypnotherapy might also be a successful treatment. In order for treatment to be successful, one must commit to working with the therapist and not expect the therapist to do the curing.
